Power continuity inside a data center

A visual walk through the electrical path that keeps computing equipment supplied when utility power is interrupted.

Original educational animation. The sequence is conceptual and does not describe a specific facility, design or operating event.

The sequence, in words

A descriptive summary of the film, not a word-for-word narration transcript.

  1. Utility power enters through the normal supply path while backup sources remain ready.
  2. When the normal source is interrupted, stored energy bridges the transition so critical computing loads do not see an immediate break.
  3. Standby generation starts and reaches a stable operating condition before the protected load transfers.
  4. The closing sequence follows recovery to the normal source and shows why switching, stored energy and generation have distinct jobs.

Utility power fails. The servers stay on. Batteries support the DC bus. The online UPS inverter keeps supplying the load. The control monitors utility. After unacceptable power and the configured start delay, it signals a start not battery depletion. The generator starts. Voltage and frequency must stabilize before selection. The open-transition switch selects the generator. Never both sources together. Generator power feeds the UPS rectifier and DC bus, while the same inverter keeps running. Batteries stop supplying power and recharge as permitted. Returning utility must stay acceptable through the retransfer delay. The switch returns to utility. Batteries bridge the break if needed. Unloaded, the generator cools down, then stops, ready again. The servers stayed on.

What to take away

Follow the boundary between an observation and a completed change. A visual sequence makes the mechanism easier to discuss; a real design still needs site-specific engineering, operating procedures and verification.
